Ryder's art spans media and disciplines to integrate classical Baroque and Chinese art with modern subjects. Drawing on his heritage as a Canadian married into a Chinese family, Ryder adapts traditional forms such as oil painting, calligraphy, preludes and fugues, seal carving, and woodblock printing with the inspiration and iconography he soaks up from downtown Toronto. His imagery verges on the symbolic, and the personages he tries to capture hold special place in his world. Never one to avoid a challenge, Ryder has embarked on several projects that showcase this unique perspective and intend to leave a legacy of innovation.
